Our Doctors
Dr Sarah Ismail
Dr Sarah Ismail is a consultant ophthalmologist at St John Eye, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, in the cornea and orbital units. She graduated her Masters degree in Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2021 which she passed with distinction. She has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals, and is currently involved in various research projects. She is one of the few female ophthalmologists in South Africa that is undertaking research projects that will enhance the understanding and ophthalmological disease profile on the African continent. She is instrumental in formulating multicentre projects across the African continent that will contribute to the knowledge base in African Ophthalmology.
Dr Ismail has presented at both national and international congresses, and won the best oral paper presentation at the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa Congress in 2022. She has presented at the South African Society of Oculoplastic Surgeons Congress, where she came second for best poster at the congress.
Dr Ismail teaches registrars in training how to perform cataract surgeries (phacoemulsification and MSICS), ocular trauma surgeries, and various other ocular surgical procedures. In addition, she teaches registrars in training how to diagnose and manage complicated corneal and orbital pathologies referred to St John Eye Hospital.
Dr Ismail is responsible for operating on advanced anterior segment pathologies, complicated cataract surgeries, as well as the management of anterior segment complications that result from complicated cataract surgeries performed at, and referred to St John Eye Hospital.
Dr Naseer Ally
Dr. Naseer Ally is a consultant ophthalmologist and head of the largest vitreoretinal unit in the country at St John Eye Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2023. He qualified as an ophthalmologist in 2017 and holds two master's degrees, his Master's in Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2017 and Master's of Surgery (Clinical Ophthalmology) in 2021. He is the recipient of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle medal for graduating top of his class for the latter degree. He strives to be a clinician-scientist with publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as reviewing for numerous international publications. He graduated from the Harvard Medical School Graduate Clinical Scholars Research Training Program (HMS_GCSRT).
Dr. Ally was previously the vice-chairman of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa Young Ophthalmologist (OSSAYO) committee. He was a committee member of the first African Ophthalmology Council (AOC) congress organising committee. He is also part of the African Ophthalmology Council Leadership Development Program (AOC LDP). On a local level, he has served as a councilor for the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa, where he regularly examines trainee ophthalmologists.
He volunteers as the co-ordinating ophthalmologist for the Tshemba foundation who have set up a state-of-the-art cataract centre in Mpumalanga, a rural province of South Africa.
